Buy Less Stuff

Greetings from a slightly less cluttered Concord!   ❄️

As we settle into the new year, many of us are feeling that post-holiday “stuff-ocation”—that familiar moment where we realize we have a few more things in our closets than we have space for. But here in town, there’s a wonderful movement taking root t

♻️ Sustainable gifting is about more than just recycled wrapping paper; it’s about shifting our mindset from being consumers to being caretakers of our town and our planet. When we share resources or gift pre-loved items, we’re doing more than just helping a neighbor—we’re actively keeping waste out of landfills and lowering our collective carbon footprint.

Fortunately, Concord has a robust network of neighbors ready to help. If you’re looking to clear some space or find a “new-to-you” treasure, here is your local sustainable toolkit:

  • Buy Nothing Concord/Carlisle

This is a true “gift economy” where everything is strictly free—no selling or bartering allowed. It’s a great way to find anything from a vintage chair to a gallon of extra paint. To Join the community, search for “Buy Nothing Concord Carlisle” on Facebook or use the Buy Nothing app.

  • FreeCycle

This is a grassroots & entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving and getting stuff for free in their own Towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Like the gifts, membership is also free.

  • The Drop-off Swap-off (REUSIT)

A true Concord institution! Run by the volunteers at REUSIT and Concord Public Works, this event is like our local “town square” for reuse. It’s the perfect place to drop off usable household items or “shop” the swap for free. Keep an eye out for the May 2026 event date.

  • Nextdoor and Craigslist

For a quick, easy hand-off, these platforms are staples for our area.

Nextdoor: This is the best place for “Curbside Alerts.” If you see a “Free” sign on a neighbor’s lawn, post it here to help someone else find it!

Craigslist (Metrowest): The “Free” category is always worth a daily check for high-quality items available for porch pickup right here in the 01742.

  • Library of Things at the Concord Library

Last, but not least, take a look at the Library of Things at the Concord Main or Fowler Branch Libaries. You’ll be amazed at what you can checkout for free. Try out board games and telescopes, electronics converters and specialty cake pans; there are so many choices.

We’d love to hear about your favorite ways to share resources locally. If you have a sustainable gifting story or a resource we missed, please get in touch or share your story on our social media pages below!
