It will start with Special Remarks by Susan Solomon\, MIT professor\, Nobel Prize recipient\, and author of Solvable: How We Healed the Earth\, and How We Can Do It Again. Susan Solomon is an atmospheric chemistry professor at MIT and author of the book Solvable: How We Healed the Earth\, and How We Can Do It Again\, published in June 2024. Professor Solomon is well-known for her pioneering work on the Antarctic ozone layer and played a crucial role in repairing the ozone hole. She is founding director of the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative\, and she co-led the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I which won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Her remarks will be followed by SPJE coalition members Corrinne Doud\, Neil Rasmussen\, Chuck Collins\, and Alex Chatfield\, who will update the audience on the coalition’s recent achievements and future plans.

SUMMARY:Changes to Concord’s Curbside Recycling Program
DESCRIPTION:Come and Learn More about the Changes to Concord’s Curbside Collection Program for Solid Waste & Recycling \nIn October 2024\, the Town will be migrating to an automated curbside collection model and single stream recycling. Over the past two years Concord Public Works\, with the assistance and support of the Public Works Commission\, has carefully evaluated the current solid waste and recycling curbside program\, which has not seen substantial change in over twenty years.  \nAfter careful consideration regarding the convenience for users\, the level of service provided\, the cost\, and the sustainability of the program\, CPW is making some changes.  Moving to automated collection will result in newer trucks with better emissions.  It will reduce the program’s operational costs by increasing efficiency through reduced collection times. A 35-gallon cart for solid waste still helps Concord achieve its goals of waste reduction and also allows for continued participation in the MassDEP PAYT (Pay-As-You-Throw) program\, while a  larger\, 96-gallon\, container for recyclables encourages recycling. \n\nJustine St. John \, Program Analyst with Concord Public Works\, will give a short presentation on the changes to the program and will be available to answer your questions. \nArrive at 7:45 am to enjoy coffee\, treats\, and conversation

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul Kirshen will talk about the theory of climate risk assessment and adaptation planning and then talk about some of the likely threats facing Concord and the Boston area in terms of environmental\, social\, and built systems in our region.\n\nDr. Kirshen is a Professor of Climate Adaptation in the School for the Environment at University of Massachusetts Boston and Research Director of the Stone Living Lab. He has more than 40 years of research experience related to water resources and coastal zone management and climate variability and change. Since 1990\, he has been a consultant to the City of Boston on the integrated vulnerability of the city to present and future climates and adaptation/management strategies. He also serves on the Climate Action Committee for the Town of Concord. \nEvent hosted by ConcordCAN – the Concord Climate Action Network – and the First Parish Environmental Team.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring Concord resident Wilson Kerr \nForty percent of all of our insect species now face extinction. US Monarch butterfly populations are down 80-90% in the last 20 years. Since 1970\, the number of songbirds in the United States has dropped by over 3 billion.  \nAnnually in the US\, a staggering 80 million pounds of pesticides are applied to our yards\, and yet most people have little to no working knowledge regarding the risks and dangers of their use. The rapid rise of highly toxic “Neonics” is particularly alarming and yet most municipalities\, including Thoreau’s Concord\, do not regulate the use of these toxins and other pesticides on private property. Wilson Kerr will present on this topic with the hope of raising awareness and informing our group. He will also cover some practical\, effective\, non-toxic alternatives. \nWilson writes the Time Outdoors column for the Concord Bridge and is an amateur naturalist and avid outdoorsman. He has two young daughters and has developed a personal interest in the largely unregulated use of dangerous lawn pesticides (and why towns cannot or will not restrict their use). Stopping air leaks (airsealing) is the most important part of reducing energy usage\, and industry best practices will be discussed. We badly need to hear what can be done to address the growing impacts of global climate change and its role in exacerbating wildfires\, hurricanes\, rising sea level temperatures\, and other destructive climatic events. That is the focus of this forum\, featuring climate economist\, Gilbert (Gib) Metcalf. Gib has written and spoken extensively on the economics of climate change and the effectiveness and socio-economic impacts of different policy approaches to eliminating our greenhouse gas emissions.  Gib will be introduced by Peter Lowitt\, who will act as moderator for the program. SUMMARY:Electrifying Concord: Addressing Climate Change Through Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:An important benchmark of making progress towards mitigating climate change is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions\, and Concord is no exception. The electrification of buildings and transportation – two sectors responsible for approximately 50% of global carbon emissions\, and 95% of Concord’s emissions – is an essential strategy for making meaningful impacts and achieving our climate and sustainability goals.  Electrification is particularly effective in Concord given that 99% of the electricity purchased by CMLP comes from carbon-free sources.  \n  \nConcord is positioned as a leader for progressive electrification policies for buildings and transportation.  Most recently\, the Town has adopted the Specialized Stretch Building Code and is preparing to be one of only ten municipalities in the MA Fossil Fuel Free Building Demonstration Program\, which will prohibit fossil fuel use in new building construction.  Concord is also a leader in electrifying transportation\, including a municipal electric fleet policy\, adoption of electric school buses\, and a listing among the ‘top three’ municipalities for EV adoption in Massachusetts.   \n  \nOur guest speaker\,  Eric Simms\, is the Sustainability Director here in Concord.  Prior to coming to Concord\, he spent 20 years in higher education developing and managing science-based education and communication programs that bridged the academic research community with a broad spectrum of educators\, students\, and the public.  More recently\, Eric served as Education Programs Manager at the Harvard University Center for the environment where he brought together faculty and students from multiple disciplines across the University to broaden their perspectives on climate and energy issues.  He is excited to use his scientific training and multi-disciplinary perspectives to continue to position the Town as a leader in the addressing climate change and help to create a truly sustainable Concord. \n  \nEvent sponsored by ConcordCAN! – The Concord Climate Action Network

DESCRIPTION:Join us during Climate Prep Week to view Doug Tallamy’s “What’s the Rush?” video\, and find out what you can do in your own yard to regenerate biodiversity. Tallamy is Professor of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and the author of Bringing Nature Home; Nature’s Best Hope; and The Nature of Oaks. His grassroots organization\, Homegrown National Park®\, is a non-profit dedicated to galvanizing individuals and communities to regenerate biodiversity and ecosystem function by planting native plants. \nThe video will be followed by a chat with panelists who are already taking steps to shrink lawns\, remove invasive species\, add native plants\, avoid insecticides\, herbicides and fertilizers\, reduce nighttime light pollution and more.
