SUMMARY:ConcordCAN Sustainable Coffee: Building Sustainable Housing
DESCRIPTION:Concord is one of a small group of towns that has joined a pilot program that requires all new construction to be fossil free. If you are wondering about such construction\, Dan Gainsboro has many years of experience in building all-electric houses. He will speak to his methods of building houses that are energy efficient\, comfortable living spaces and\, at the same time\, creating village-like communities that naturally encourage social interaction of the residents. \nDan Gainsboro is a Concord resident and Director of NOW Communities\, which specializes in creating community-focused neighborhoods that emphasize sustainability and energy efficiency. The firm’s first major residential development\, Concord Riverwalk\, was an immense success – earning acclaim from planners\, architects\, and environmentalists alike\, and generating tremendous demand for its cottage-style units. NOW Communities has been recognized with some of the architecture and urban development industry’s most prestigious awards\, including Builder Magazine’s Project of the Year\, the National Association of Homebuilder’s Community of the Year\, and the American Institute of Architects’ New England Design Honor Award.

SUMMARY:Changes to Concord’s Curbside Recycling Program
DESCRIPTION:Come and Learn More about the Changes to Concord’s Curbside Collection Program for Solid Waste & Recycling \nIn October 2024\, the Town will be migrating to an automated curbside collection model and single stream recycling. Over the past two years Concord Public Works\, with the assistance and support of the Public Works Commission\, has carefully evaluated the current solid waste and recycling curbside program\, which has not seen substantial change in over twenty years.  \nAfter careful consideration regarding the convenience for users\, the level of service provided\, the cost\, and the sustainability of the program\, CPW is making some changes.  Moving to automated collection will result in newer trucks with better emissions.  It will reduce the program’s operational costs by increasing efficiency through reduced collection times. A 35-gallon cart for solid waste still helps Concord achieve its goals of waste reduction and also allows for continued participation in the MassDEP PAYT (Pay-As-You-Throw) program\, while a  larger\, 96-gallon\, container for recyclables encourages recycling. \n\nJustine St. John \, Program Analyst with Concord Public Works\, will give a short presentation on the changes to the program and will be available to answer your questions. \nArrive at 7:45 am to enjoy coffee\, treats\, and conversation

SUMMARY:We're All Plastic People Now
DESCRIPTION:Join Oceana\, Mothers Out Front & Concord Library for a free screening of the new documentary We’re All Plastic People Now by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Rory Fielding about the global plastic pollution crisis featuring Oceana’s own Plastics Campaign Director Christy Leavitt and Oceana board member Ted Danson. The film shows the chilling reality of how pervasive plastic pollution is in our lives. Plastic is everywhere from the air we breathe to the water we drink.   \nSolving the plastic pollution crisis requires that we curb single-use plastic production and cut off the problem at the source. Reuse and refill systems can move us away from throwaway plastics. The future can include less plastic if we turn off the tap and invest in non-toxic reuse together. \nFollowing the film there will be time for brief Q&A\, and participants will be encouraged to “take action” by calling their MA House Representatives asking them to vote in support of priority legislation aimed at reducing plastic pollution before the end of the Legislative session (July 31st)! \nRSVP requested: [Google Form] https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdYJgVyBHKDu6Rr_0TavTXPQY84op7Ipx_l9EoB063XR80OSA/viewform?usp=sf_link

SUMMARY:Environmental Campaigning - Taking Action Now
DESCRIPTION:As we see more and more effects from climate change in the form of severe flooding\, intense storms\, and raging wild fires\, it has been increasingly imperative that we have a government leadership that will act to sustain a livable planet. Given the enormous stakes in the November election at all levels of government\, we must elect environmentally-oriented candidates and prevent a climate-change denying government from dismantling regulatory agencies and allowing fossil fuel companies to drill where they want\, when they want.  \nGetting involved is essential; we are a powerful force when we all take action. ConcordCAN has invited multiple speakers who will talk about what we can do to help to get out the vote and elect candidates who support environmental issues. If you are a long-time activist\, you will learn about new organizations and tactics. If you are a newcomer to campaign volunteering\, you will learn how easy and useful it can be to get involved. \nSpecific organizations include: \n\nEnvironmental Voter Project\nCitizens Climate Lobby\nElders Climate Action\nConcord Indivisible\nVolunteerBlue
